Optimal Design of Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Motors for Ship RIM-Driven Thruster

This paper deals with the design and optimization of a 2.1 MW rim-driven electric thruster for ship propulsion. For this purpose, double stator ironless rotor axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) motor is considered as propulsion motor. The analytical model selected AFPM presented. magnetic field in machine calculated using 3D charge concept combination image theory permeance functions to take into account slotting effects, simple thermal used evaluate heat dissipation capabilities dependence main electromagnetic losses. To optimally AFPM, an process based on genetic algorithms applied minimize cost active materials. An appropriate objective function has been constructed, different constraints related electrical, geometrical, mechanical parameters have taken account. achieved results are compared performance podded radial (RFPM) motor, which reference obtained show fairly satisfactory improvement masses Finally, accuracy optimum solution validated by performing finite element analysis (3D-FEA) simulations.
